On Sunday, October 24, 1976, sometime between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., Sterling Ferguson and his wife, Frances, accompanied by Frances' older sister and the latter's granddaughter, went to a trash dump owned by the City of Ellington ("the City") to look for books and magazines. The dump abuts the east side of highway 21 north of the City.
