On August 13, 1979, Gene Roddenen was arrested and charged with grand larceny and possession of stolen property. He was suffering from a stab wound to the abdomen which required emergency care, and on the following day he was admitted to plaintiff Brookdale Medical Center where he was placed under a continuous police guard.
