Plaintiffs initiated this negligence action under 28 U.S.C. §§ 1346(b), 2671 et seq., against the United States Postal Service and its employee, Lawrence Cotton, to recover for property damage and injuries resulting from an automobile collision between a Ford Pinto owned by the Postal Service (and driven by Lawrence Cotton) and a pickup truck owned and operated by plaintiff Melvin Broom.
