LYNCH, J.
The defendant was convicted by a jury on August 20, 1981, of murder in the first degree for the fatal shooting of Robert W. LaMonica. The shooting occurred shortly after midnight on May 31, 1980, outside LaMonica's Braintree apartment. The defendant was sentenced to a term of life imprisonment and now appeals his conviction.
