Defendant first contends that he was denied due process and equal protection due to the trial court's denial of his pre-trial request for funds for a psychiatric examination to determine his mental condition at the time of the offense. His motion was made pursuant to G.S. § 7A-54 and stated that:

1. The Defendant has been indicted on charges of Rape, Burglary, and First Degree Sexual Offenses, each of which are punishable by maximum Life...
