Robert Allen Lloyd seeks habeas corpus relief from a 1967 conviction under Md.Ann. Code art. 27, § 88(a) (1951) for criminal nonsupport. That statute provided in relevant part:

Any person who shall without just cause desert or wilfully neglect to provide for the support and maintenance of his wife shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction in any court of the State having criminal jurisdiction...
