This is an appeal from a conviction of first degree murder and a sentence of life imprisonment. The only disputed issue at trial was defendant's sanity at the time of the offense.1 For the reasons that follow, we set aside the conviction, concluding that the trial judge erred in excluding the testimony of Dr. Charles Armistead, who had examined defendant as a member of the sanity commission and had stated that he was unable...
