These two consolidated lawsuits arose from a fire that began in rented residential premises in New Orleans at 4219 Canal Street and spread to the building at 4217 Canal Street. Plaintiff, Rhonda Broome, was the tenant of 4219 Canal Street. She filed suit against the owner-lessor, Wendell Gauthier, and his insurer, State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, to recover for property damage, physical injury, and mental suffering.
