On February 11, 1982, defendant was indicted for the crime of promoting prison contraband in the first degree. On request, he was assigned counsel on February 19, 1982 and the case adjourned until March 12, 1982. Thereafter, on March 3, 1982, defendant was returned to court without any prior notice and advised that he had to enter a plea and, if the plea was not guilty, he would be required to start trial that morning.
