On September 3, 1981, management at the Reynolds Metals Company's Jones Mill aluminum production facility was informed by its superiors that, due to a decline in the market for aluminum products, two "pot lines" were to be shut down. Because of this, 186 production employees were laid off by Reynolds. On November 2, 1981, an additional "pot line" was ordered closed and 166 additional production employees were laid off.
