The defendant, Jerry Willis, was charged by bill of indictment with the second degree murder (LSA-R.S. 14:30.1) of Thomas Chapman, arising from a shooting incident on July 1, 1981, at a tavern in Calcasieu Parish. Defendant pleaded not guilty, urging that he acted in self-defense, but was found guilty as charged at his subsequent jury trial in September 1982.
