Jessie Green was convicted of first degree murder1 of his common law wife, Katie Riley, and sentenced to life imprisonment without benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

He had tried unsuccessfully to convince a 12-person jury that there had been sufficient provocation to justify a verdict of manslaughter.2
