Mary Irene Laney (nee Mary Irene Phillips, and called Irene) was born in 1928. She was the third child of six children of Ira and Rebecca Phillips. In 1932, when Irene was four years old, the Phillipses were financially devastated by the depression and sent their children to different relatives who were able to provide for the children.
