ARMENTANO, J.

On July 23, 1978, a young woman was atrociously beaten and stabbed to death with kitchen utensils. The defendant was indicted by a grand jury for the crime of murder in violation of General Statutes § 53a-54a (a).1 He elected to be tried by a three-judge court.
