Nelson was convicted of the murder, aggravated sodomy, and rape of a 6-year-old girl in Chatham Superior Court. He received a death sentence for murder and consecutive life sentence for aggravated sodomy and rape. His convictions and sentence were affirmed on direct appeal; Nelson v.
