On April 27, 1982, when he was nineteen years of age, defendant appellant, Michael S. Smith, entered a plea of guilty to a charge of robbery. He had been convicted previously of a felony and had been sentenced to serve an indefinite term of imprisonment in the state reformatory and, after serving the time prescribed by law, had been granted "shock" probation.
