Thomas J. TerKeurst was killed in an airplane crash on June 11, 1979, when a DC-3 aircraft owned and operated by the United States Forest Service crashed into the Selway River in Northeastern Idaho. On the basis of a fact-finding operation conducted by the Forest Service, it appears that both engines of the DC-3 aircraft failed to operate at the time of the crash.
