Jerry Steward and Freddie Bell (defendant) were indicted for armed robbery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1977, ch. 38, par. 18-2). Jerry Steward was tried by a jury in absentia, found guilty, and sentenced to 18 years. After a bench trial, defendant was found guilty and sentenced to 28 years.
