Petitioner Ahrendt, a police officer, was injured during a riot on July 16, 1977. He was taken that same day to Long Island College Hospital. The immediate diagnosis in the hospital record was "contusion of abdominal wall". The petitioner was discharged from the hospital but he never returned to work. In a report dated December 5, 1978, the medical board found him "unfit for duty by reason of low back pain". It was recommended that...
