On or about July 17, 1980, plaintiff Amoco Oil Co. ("Amoco Oil") consigned a shipment of approximately 507,784 barrels of oil for transport on the defendant vessel, M.T. Mary Ellen, from Bejaia, Algeria, to Corpus Christi, Texas. The oil was to be delivered to Amoco Oil, but the vessel grounded, causing alleged contamination and short delivery of the oil.
