On 30 January 1980, James Edward Piatt was found guilty of first degree murder in violation of former A.R.S. §§ 13-451 and 13-452. The State did not seek the death penalty and defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment without possibility of parole for 25 years, pursuant to former A.R.S. § 13-453(A).
