KELLEHER, Justice.

This case involves yet another facet of the criminal proceedings arising out of a 1977 narcotics investigation at the Carlton House Motor Inn. On two prior occasions we ruled on the legality of particular police conduct that occurred during the investigation. See State v. Bennett, R.I., 430 A.2d 424 (1981), and State v. Alexander, R.I., 433 A.2d 965
