The defendant, Francis E. LaChappelle (LaChappelle), was convicted by a jury in the Superior Court of assault with intent to commit rape1 and was sentenced to twenty years at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI).2 The case is now before us on the defendant's appeal in which he seeks to reverse his conviction on the grounds that the trial justice's in-chambers conference...
