Plaintiff Besmehn is a longshoreman who was injured while unloading steel from the defendant Pacific Coast Shipping Company's ship, the Pacmonarch. Defendant-appellant Schnitzer Steel Products Co. (Schnitzer) is the owner of the dock at which the vessel was berthed at the time and is the consignee of the cargo being unloaded.
