Defendant Elias Martinez appeals his criminal conviction on the ground that he was denied effective assistance of counsel. Martinez was tried on seven counts of distributing or conspiring to distribute heroin in violation of 21 U.S.C. §§ 841(a)(1), 846, and he was represented by retained counsel, Matias Morin. Among the witnesses against Martinez was Alonso Quintanilla, Jr., who figured in three of the counts upon which Martinez was tried...
