The appellant, Ricky Lee Webb, was charged in separate indictments returned by the Gibson County grand jury with the first degree murder and rape of Charlotte Blurton. He was tried October 23-25, 1978, and found guilty of both charges. The jury set his punishment at life imprisonment for the murder and 99 years' and one day imprisonment for the rape.
