The question before us is whether defendant, Carl Stephen Roberts, was denied his constitutional right to effective assistance of counsel as guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and Article I, Sections 19 and 23 of the Constitution of North Carolina. The traditional test for ineffective assistance of counsel was adopted by the North Carolina Supreme Court in State v. Sneed, 284 N.C. 606
