On August 9, 1978, the body of Valerie Anne Mayne was found at her home at Rock Hall, Kent County, Maryland. The home was owned by her estranged husband, Lester Thomas Mayne, Jr., the appellant. An autopsy revealed that death was caused by a single stab wound to the abdomen. A knife was discovered near the body by the officers who arrived in response to a telephone call from the appellant.
