This case arises out of the attempted enforcement of restrictive covenants in a deed to two lots in an area known as "Meadowlane" in the outskirts of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The property was purchased in 1973 by Donald F. Knapp and his wife, Bette M. Knapp (hereafter the Knapps), for the purpose of establishing a non-institutional home for retarded adults.
