On March 30, 1977, the minor child who is the subject of this lawsuit was born in St. Joseph's Hospital of Pontiac, Michigan. Within 24 hours of birth this child, known as Baby X for purposes of these proceedings, began exhibiting symptoms of drug withdrawal, whereupon a petition was filed with the Oakland County Probate Court alleging that appellant, Mother X, had so neglected her child that the court should assert jurisdiction.
