On August 29, 1977, the North Slope Borough police in Barrow received a report that two human bodies had been discovered. Barrow police officers immediately traveled to the place of discovery, a stretch of beach on the Arctic Ocean some five miles from Barrow and almost a mile from the nearest human habitation.
