On April 3, 1979, the Kennebec County Grand Jury indicted the defendant and Steve Gillcash for murder of the defendant's mother in violation of 17-A M.R.S.A. § 201(1)(A). Subsequently, the defendant's trial was severed from that of his codefendant. M.R.Crim.P. 14.
