Plaintiff Gambill has worked in the trucking industry for his entire working life. He started with Helphrey Motor Freight in 1945. In 1946, he joined Teamsters Union Local No. 690. From 1947 until 1969, he engaged in many kinds of work for Helphrey; primarily, he worked in the office, but occasionally did bargaining unit work which was subject to the Union's jurisdiction.
