The defendant was tried before a Superior Court judge and jury on indictments charging murder in the first degree, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, and armed assault within a dwelling. The jury returned guilty verdicts on all three indictments.1 The trial judge then imposed the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without parole for murder in the first degree...
