The defendant was convicted in a jury trial of the crime of violating section 3 of the corrupt practices act (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1977, ch. 102, par. 3), based on the claim that he was president of a local school board which made purchases from a hardware store in which he was the principal stockholder. He was sentenced to 9 months probation, fined $250 on each count of the three-count...
