Plaintiffs brought this class action1 under 42 U.S.C. Section 1983 to enjoin enforcement of a 1977 Illinois statute withdrawing medical assistance funding in Illinois for all abortions except those "necessary for the preservation of the life of the [pregnant] woman." P.A. 80-1091, Ill.Rev. Stat.Supp.1978, ch. 23, Sections 5-5, 6-1, 7-1.
