In the fall term of 1977, the Etowah County Grand Jury indicated the appellant for first degree murder and robbery. He was arraigned on these charges and entered a plea of not guilty, and not guilty by reason of insanity.

Upon motion of defense counsel, the appellant was referred to Bryce State Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. In a letter from the hospital, dated June 14, 1978, the appellant was certified mentally competent to stand trial...
