Limmie West was convicted after a jury trial of attempted armed robbery and sentenced to forty-nine years and six months at hard labor on July 2, 1969. There was no appeal of the conviction and sentence but West did file a petition for a writ of habeas corpus in the district court the following year, alleging that his counsel conferred with him for only five minutes prior to trial.
