On July 27, 1976, defendant was convicted by a jury of second-degree murder, MCL 750.317; MSA 28.549, and was sentenced to life imprisonment. This prosecution arose out of the fatal shooting of a police officer on January 9, 1976. Defendant admitted shooting the officer but claimed that he acted in self-defense.
