Defendant Ricky Dale Smith was convicted, upon his plea of guilty, of one count of armed robbery, MCL 750.529; MSA 28.797. He appeals as of right. A detailed statement of facts is necessary to our disposition of this case.

In the first months of 1976 the police departments in Flint and Traverse City began investigations of numerous armed robberies in those two cities. Suspicion centered on two people, one Jack Lown, an escapee from Michigan's prison...
