The Orleans Parish Grand Jury indicted defendant, Curtis Sawyer, for second degree murder. The jury returned a responsive verdict of manslaughter. The State charged defendant as an habitual offender under LSA-R.S. 15:529.1 based on three prior felony convictions. The lower court, finding defendant to be an habitual offender as charged, sentenced him to serve twenty-one years in the custody of the Department of Corrections, with credit for time...
