The defendant and one Leo Farland were indicted for the crimes of murder in the first degree and armed robbery arising from an episode at Ascension Church in Worcester in which Chester F. Szklarz was robbed and killed. Farland was tried first. When the trial was well under way he pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree and armed robbery.
