In the spring of 1971, the plaintiff Ruth T. Archer discovered a small lump on her neck and made an appointment with Herman Judd, M.D., for an examination. She was then 41 years of age. Dr. Judd had laboratory tests performed, one of which showed that the thyroid gland was releasing the correct amount of thyroid into the bloodstream, but another test showed that the left lobe of the thyroid was not assimilating iodine properly.
