The accident in question took place on November 3, 1973, shortly after 7 p.m., on North Teutonia Avenue in the City of Milwaukee. Teutonia Avenue is a divided street with a grassy median strip surrounded by a concrete curb. There are three traffic lanes on each side of the median strip—a right lane that can be used for parking, a center lane, and a left lane adjacent to the median strip.
