On the evening of December 29, 1973, the Police Department of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, received a report that an armed robbery was in progress at a local grocery store. Officers John E. Salter and A. W. Steen responded to the call and were proceeding toward the store when their police car struck and killed Homer Walton as he attempted to cross the street.
