HARRISON, Justice.

John Joseph Abdo was convicted by a jury on December 4,1975, of manufacturing phencyclidine, a controlled substance. His punishment was fixed at 12 years confinement in the penitentiary, a sentence within the limits prescribed by Code § 54-524.101:1(a). Final judgment of conviction was entered by the trial court on January 8, 1976, and defendant noted an appeal. Section 54-524.101:1(a) had been repealed and reenacted as Code § 18.2-248...
