In June of 1972, plaintiffs Dorothy Lorraine Stamus and Lynne Marie Stamus were taken into custody due to alleged mental illness and detained involuntarily at Broadlawns Polk County Hospital pursuant to the then-existing Iowa civil commitment laws.1 Approximately one year later, the Stamuses filed this action attacking the constitutionality of the Iowa involuntary hospitalization...
