The defendant, Anthony Spicuzza, was charged by indictment with the offense of theft over $150 in that, on August 11, 1970, he knowingly obtained unauthorized control over an automobile with intent permanently to deprive the owner of its use and benefit, in violation of section 16-1 of the Criminal Code (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1969, ch. 38, par. 16-1).1
