REARDON, J.

The defendant was found guilty of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, and of abuse of a female child, on two indictments lodged against him on November 12, 1973. He was sentenced thereafter to the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Walpole on the second indictment for a term of nine to fifteen years. The case, transferred from the Appeals Court on our own motion, is here on assignments of error based on the defendant's allegations...
