MARCUS, Justice.

Edwin C. Rowell, while imprisoned in the Rapides Parish jail, escaped by walking out of jail with a work release crew in place of another prisoner. He was apprehended in Texas, returned to Rapides Parish and charged with simple escape. La. R.S. 14:110A(1). After trial by jury, he was found guilty as charged. Thereafter, by bill of information, defendant was charged under the Habitual Offender Law, La.R.S. 15:529.1, and sentenced to serve 10 years...
